I haven't had much energy, what with getting classes set up and other time-consuming junk. (Yes, that's right, college. Shut up.)

Eitherhoo, here's a small project post - DIY guitar picks. I ran across this idea by chance while searching for something else. Since Sarah is always whining about one thing or another about learning the guitar - namely refusing to even try to begin learning unless she has every accessory under the sun to go with it - I decided to have her help me tackle at least one obstacle - guitar picks. Why go out and spend money on tiny hunks of plastic when you have them lying around your house? (Usually ready to go in the trash.) Who among us doesn't have an empty gift card lying around the house?

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; tiny ones hurt your hand.)
sand paper (we used a sanding sponge)
Goo Gone (to remove residue from any stickers/labels that might be present)

We happened to have seven, which makes 35 picks when laid out like this, 5 picks per card:

All cut out, they look roughly like this. The tutorial I found used old credit cards with the upraised numbers, but I think this would rub your fingers funny after prolonged use.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; It's in color, more frames per second, and lots of angles and stuff - but to me it's more flat-out creepy in places (especially the tree thing at the beginning) than cute-creepy. It has the same building design as Skeleton Dance, same sight gags, animation patterns (the rooster, the weird horse formation near the end).

Here's a similar Silly Symphony, "Egyptian Melodies" from 1931. Notice the similar "sweep" dance move. This is a funky little pencil box I've had as long as I can remember. If I remember right, it's something my mother had or found - it seems to be from her generation, at least. It's an old metal pencil case with some cute little cartoon animals on it. No date, no writing on the front or back, and a lovely gold color on the inside.. It reads "Swallow Pencils" with an apporpriately themed logo, and says Made In China, so I presume the foreign characters are Chinese. I tried a quick search for this company or similar products, but all I find are pencil cases with swallow-bird designs (all modern) or what to do if you swallow a pencil (ouch). The scrapes on it are actually teeth marks; as a small child, I liked the taste of metal things and would gnaw or suck on them, much to my mother's fear.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I am working on finishing a handful of projects that I've got in progress so I can have something to show. Meanwhile I'll work on a photo tour of the household knicknacks and comb around for past projects and cool ideas.

This isn't just a showing-off blog, I will definitely need advice from time to time - plants, shopping locales, materials, methods, colors, etc.
